Hong Kong Marine Department fire safety notice for vessels under repair
THE Hong Kong Marine department has issued a warning following a fire onboard a pleasure vessel under repair moored beside a fish raft.
The vessel's fibre glass structure was under repair inside the forward cabin with a mixture of resin and drying agent. A day after repairs the coxswain returned to the vessel to find that the new compound material had not been hardened. To speed up the drying process he switched an electric fan inside the cabin and the exhaust fan inside the toilet of the cabin without first opening the windows to ventilate the flammable gas which accumulated over night.
The gas which had been accumulated inside the cabin over the night ignited a fire which broke out inside the cabin while the coxswain was on the upper deck. With the assistance of other people using portable fire extinguishers the fire was extinguished but the cabin sustained extensive damage and the coxswain suffered serious injury.
The Marine Department notice outlined the importance of sufficient ventilation for repair of cabin in repairs using compound material of resin and drying agent, while any heat sources inside the compartments should be isolated during repair.
