Dubai Maritime City Authority discusses cooperation in various aspects of maritime sector with Hong Kong
Dubai Maritime City Authority (DMCA) recently concluded an official visit to Hong Kong. A delegation led by Amer Ali, Executive Director of DMCA, held bilateral talks with Ms. Joy Lam, Deputy General-Secretary of the Transport and Housing in Hong Kong, to discuss ways to strengthen cooperation between the two parties and open up new prospects for creating fruitful partnerships aimed at developing various aspects of the respective maritime sectors of Dubai and Hong Kong.
Dubai’s various globally acknowledged maritime achievements took up most of the discussions, with Hong Kong officials briefed on the success of the emirate in joining the ranks of the global top 10 in terms of the competitiveness and attractiveness of its maritime components. The delegates explained that this is driven by the ambitious vision to make Dubai one of the leading maritime capitals of the world by 2020.
Ms. Lam and her team were informed of the latest developments within Dubai’s maritime sector. She commended Dubai for ranking 4th out of the 5th largest port operators in the world by headquarters and the 6th leading maritime destination for port and logistics services and sites of world-class specialized logistics services. She also praised DMCA for the success of its Maritime Sector Strategy which has made the greatest impact in raising regional and international investor confidence in the competitiveness of local maritime sector components, emphasizing how the sophisticated legislation and infrastructure of Dubai have contributed to the creation of an encouraging environment for foreign investments.
The meeting highlighted prominent events organized by DMCA, such as Dubai Maritime Week, a leading global forum that brings together senior government officials, decision makers and maritime leaders, international experts, operators and ship owners to discuss the most pressing issues within the global maritime landscape.
Amer Ali, Executive Director of DMCA, discussed the main competitive advantages of Dubai’s maritime sector, particularly the strategic location of the emirate, its safe investment environment, integrated legislation, economic and social progress, and unlimited government support. Ali revealed the best maritime practices and highest international standards followed by DMCA in order to ensure operational efficiency and set integrated strategies for improving performance, safety, efficiency and competitiveness.
He also emphasized the importance of strengthening direct communications between the maritime communities of Dubai and Hong Kong, two of the most important maritime centers in the world. He pointed out the striking similarities between the two in terms of the value added by the maritime sector to the local economy. He noted as well the importance of the visit in terms of transferring knowledge and exchanging experiences and best practices and driving the march to excellence as Dubai grows into one of the best maritime communities in the world by 2020.
"We look forward to strengthening mutual cooperation with Hong Kong’s maritime community as part of our commitment to expand our global network of strategic partnerships. We shall continue our efforts to embody the vision and directives of our wise government in building a sustainable and secure maritime sector that is diverse and inclusive, and further consolidate Dubai's position as a world-class global maritime hub," Ali concluded.
During the Hong Kong visit, the Executive Director of DMCA led a group of the Authority’s heads of Licensing, Registration, Strategy and Quality Departments.
